Latest news on Woolston and Itchen Active Travel Zone

Last summer, we ran a survey inviting local residents in Woolston and Itchen to share their thoughts about the area and identify improvements to help reduce traffic; create more attractive, liveable streets; and enable people to get around more easily, safely and sustainably in their neighbourhood. An overall summary of the survey's findings is available on our website .

In January, 110 residents attended a mix of online and face-to-face co-design workshops. A total of eight workshops took place and provided an opportunity for residents to discuss potential solutions to the issues raised in the survey.

Discussions focused on 17 streets which generated the most feedback in the initial survey. These streets were split into four sectors (North West, North East, Central and South). You can use the links below to see a summary of the survey feedback for each street, grouped by sector:

Summary of survey feedback for NORTH WEST key locations (Bridge Road, Peartree Road and Peartree Avenue)

Summary of survey feedback for NORTH EAST key locations (Bishops Road, Radstock Road, Manor Road South and Porchester Road)

Summary of survey feedback for CENTRAL key locations (Portsmouth Road, John's Road, Inkerman Road, West Road and Obelisk Road)

Summary of survey feedback for SOUTH key locations (Victoria Road, Vosper Road, Weston Grove Road, Swift Road and Archery Road)

What's next?

During the co-design workshops, residents worked in small groups and came up with various ideas and suggestions to help tackle the key issues on each street. These ideas have been recorded and are now being assessed by our engineers, who will look at the feasibility of the suggestions made.

We will then develop a set of proposals which could be delivered across the area within the available budget. We will consult on these with the local community in the summer.

In the meantime, you can continue to follow updates about the Woolston Active Travel Zone project by visiting our website . Please also encourage any of your friends, family and colleagues in the area to stay up to date with the latest news by subscribing to this bulletin .

Headlines from the survey and next steps

As you know, we’ve been busy analysing all of your feedback from our recent Woolston and Itchen Active Travel Zone survey and we now wanted to share some of the key headlines that we’ve pulled out from this.

In total, 640 respondents made 2,936 contributions. These comprised of 826 comments and 2,110 agreements. Of those that responded, 72% live in the area they commented on.

What you told us

Your comments covered everything from signage to cycling. The top five suggestions for Active Travel Zone improvements which received the most agreements were:

• Traffic calming

• Pedestrian crossings

• Parking restrictions

• One-way systems

• 20mph speed limits

You commented on numerous locations across both Woolston and Itchen. The top five locations for Active Travel Zone improvements which received the most agreements were:

• Obelisk Road

• John’s Road

• John Thornycroft Road

• Peartree Avenue

• Weston Grove Road

You also shared lots of feedback with us about issues not directly related to the Active Travel Zone project. We’ve gone through those with the most agreements and pulled out more than 170 comments about a range of issues including resurfacing, street cleaning, vegetation maintenance, encouraging business and more. We’ve shared these with the relevant council departments for them to look into further.

If you have any further comments or questions about the area that you’d like to contact the council about, the following links may be useful:

Report a road maintenance issue

Report a street cleaning issue

Report overhanging vegetation

Report a tree issue

Report a flooding issue

What’s next?

The above issues and locations offer just a brief snapshot of the priorities that we have now identified after having analysed your feedback. As previously mentioned, we’ll be running a series of co-design workshops where we’ll be working with you to look in more detail at the most important issues and develop potential solutions to these. We are looking to hold these in January (postponed from the end of this year) and will be in touch at a later date to confirm dates and how to book your place.

In the meantime, keep an eye out for future updates and encourage any of your friends, family and colleagues in the area to subscribe for the latest news here . You can also follow updates by visiting the Active Travel Zone pag e on our website.

Connecting Woolston survey - next steps

Just over three weeks into the Connecting Woolston survey, we’re now already at the halfway mark! So far, we have a staggering 1,811 contributions, including 578 comments and 1,233 agreements. If you haven’t already, don’t forget to check out the other comments people have been making and, if you agree, let us know by clicking the thumbs up button.

As we enter the last three weeks of the survey, we thought this was a good time to give you an update about what you can expect from the next stage of the project. Once the survey closes on Sunday 29 August, we’ll quickly get to work analysing all of your feedback and pulling out the key areas and concerns you have highlighted to us. This will allow us to focus our attention on the most important issues and locations which the majority of people would like to see addressed.

We will then invite you to a series of co-design workshops, where we will look more closely at those specific issues and work together to identify potential solutions to them. Co-design is all about working collaboratively with local residents and businesses to make sure that any changes in their neighbourhood are led by the very community that lives, works and travels there.

We’ll be holding the workshops in October, so please keep an eye out for future updates from us and make sure you sign up when we announce the confirmed dates for these.

Early next year, we’ll start to draw up detailed designs for your area based on the ideas discussed at these co-design workshops. We’ll then consult on these proposals with you before starting to implement the changes in your area towards the end of 2022.

More information about the project and the timelines we’re expecting to work to is available on our website .

In the meantime, keep spreading the word about the survey with your friends, family and colleagues local to the area.
